Update On The ERA/PRCA Court Proceedings …….

December 23, 2015 By Jason Hetland

ERA-League

Many of you have been asking if The Rodeo Round Up has been able to find out anything new regarding where the lawsuit between the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) and the Elite Rodeo Athletes (ERA) organizations stands.  While in Las Vegas for the last two weeks I was able to talk with my other media connections as well as some of the athletes involved in the ERA to find out that answer for each and every one of you.  I dug as best as I could while still being respectful of the WNFR that was currently going on during that time frame.

What I found out, not only about the lawsuit, was quite eye-opening and made me step back and realize that there is much more behind the scenes issues going on.  Even though the main focus is on the current lawsuit situation between these two organizations what happens will trickle down to those contestants involved in both factions as well.  There are some tense cowboys and cowgirls that are watching very closely what will be a dramatic effect on who will be in or out of the ERA once the judgement is ruled.

 Whats it mean

It was announced that there was a change in the date that pertains to the preliminary injunction so that a judgement could be ruled upon prior to the busy start of the 2016 professional rodeo season run.  The date has been moved up to a December 29th date that will allow a ruling to come within 30 days from the court date itself.  With that being said, as many of you know, that is after the start to at least two major events held early in the season.

There are two major events that the contestants of the ERA would like to join in on if the ruling goes their way, The Denver Stock Show and Rodeo as well as the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo, as well as many other events.  The PRCA and the ERA have come to an agreement that would still allow the members of the ERA to call in to compete at rodeos in the 2016 season pending the judgement from the December 29th court date.

Now even though the PRCA is allowing these contestants to call in for these rodeos that does not mean that these rodeo stars will be allowed to show up to compete.  This all depends on the final outcome and ruling from the court date.  This means that these rodeo committees and fans are waiting to see if the members of the ERA that are scheduled to compete will be allowed to.  Quite simply if the PRCA wins the judgement that means that those contestants that are part of the ERA will not be allowed to participate and if the ERA wins the judgement they will be allowed to participate in the PRCA season for 2016.

COntestants think

I was able to talk to some of the rodeo contestants that are directly involved in the ERA and have gotten many different views on this situation.  I will not be naming specific contestants to protect their identity until they give me the okay to name them individually.  With that being said, there are some contestants that have not participated in PRCA rodeos in quite some time that are 100% behind everything the ERA is doing and stands for.  These old school cowboys just want to put the money where they think it is deserved and have more say in day to day operations.

On the other side of things, some of the current members of the PRCA and founding members of the ERA who own stock in the organization have some immediate concerns.  Once again, without naming names, they voice their concern about the current happenings and how the ERA is handling things on their end.  These folks are waiting anxiously to see what the outcome will be to make any hasty decisions that will affect their careers as rodeo contestants.  Depending on what happens you will see some shareholders pulling out of the ERA to protect their rodeo careers and continue to participate in PRCA sanctioned events.

IN my Opinion

I like to keep my reporting on as neutral of a basis as I can in a professional manner and that is what I plan on doing here as well.  I will report on the information that is given to me by each side and will lay it out so it is as easy to understand as possible.  In my opinion, everything weighs on how the ruling will come down from the December 29th court date.  This will either make or break this stalemate and will ultimately decide where contestants, contractors, sponsors and fans will place their loyalties.

I have established many personal connections on both sides of this issue and will continue to support each organization and whatever may come of the situation.  As you can well imagine, there will be some turmoil and conflict but everyone will have their own reasons behind their decisions.  I do think that both organizations can flourish and be fantastic for the sport of professional rodeo.  For that to happen there must be a mutual respect and acknowledgement of the caliber of the athletes in each of the two factions.  I hope that this will end in a peaceful manner and everyone can get back to competing for their share of the well-deserved money that is awaiting each of these great athletes!

The ERA Makes Major Announcement During The 2015 WNFR Run!

December 9, 2015 By Jason Hetland

ERA-League

Things have certainly gotten entertaining here in Las Vegas and some news has come down the pipeline this morning that will shake up the rodeo world and create a buzz as fans enjoy the remaining performances of the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).  There was always a certain amount of speculation as to what was going to happen during the 10-day run here and when the exact timing of events would unfold.  Early this morning the entire rodeo industry got their answer as the Elite Rodeo Athletes Rodeo Association (ERA) released their 2016 rodeo season tour dates.

If you all remember I wrote a story before coming out to Las Vegas telling you my thoughts on what was going to happen with this very topic.  I stated that the ERA knew exactly what was happening and had a huge plan already set in place.  It just so happens that is exactly what happened as the schedule was announced the very next morning after one if its most noted athletes, Trevor Brazile, claimed his 23rd career World Championship by clinching the All-Around title at the performance last night.  It might be interesting to go back and read my story about my predictions as to what would happen to see how close I was.  Story link here!

I knew things were going to become very interesting after walking into the Country Christmas event inside of the Mandalay By Event Center just to see a huge sign hanging up on the wall as you walk into the event itself.  If the ERA wanted to create a buzz here in Las Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo they sure knew how to do it.  After doing some investigation work we also found out that they had a booth secretly tucked away out on the shopping floor which left many questions as to how that was allowed to happen

Barrel racer Taylor Jacob was photographed signing autographs at the Elite Rodeo Athlete booth which also generated more questions than answers.  After she split the round win last night Jason was able to catch up with her to talk about that win but unfortunately, we are barred from talking anything related to the ERA while down in the media room.  With that being said and as many of you know me, I did not let that stop me as I have scheduled a private sit down meeting with her to discuss this very topic.  Make sure to keep and eye out for that exclusive interview coming in the next few days!

2016 ERA Tour Dates announced at the 2015 NFR in Las Vegas

All the questions that remained leading into the start of the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo were answered early this morning when the Elite Rodeo Athletes Rodeo Association finally released their inaugural 2016 season schedule.  Speculation was that some of the bigger rodeos in the country were going to sanction with the ERA for an event but by the looks of the schedule that is not the fact at all.  I am actually glad to see that the folks running the ERA organization have gone their own separate way and have generated more excitement for the rodeo industry by creating their very own spotlight events!

Many Questions Remain Among Rodeo Fans Regarding The ERA’s Inaugural Year…

November 22, 2015 By Jason Hetland

ERA-League

As the news of the Elite Rodeo Athletes rodeo organization announcing that tickets were available for purchase for the inaugural World Championship Series many more questions started arising among the rodeo fan base and the community itself.  As of today all of us at The Rodeo Round Up have been getting emails, phone calls, text messages and social media comments regarding this entire situation.  There are still more questions than answers and I want to take a minute and share my take and on all those questions that are coming from all of our loyal listeners and followers.

Many questions

Like I said earlier the loyal professional rodeo fans have many questions that are still remaining unanswered from the Elite Rodeo Athletes head office.  I will list many of them below and share my take and my feelings on some very important concerns that remain among rodeo fans.  Since this is such an uprising and controversial topic I will also share my personal thoughts through a video blog post which you will also be able to find posted during the WNFR at some point as answers come to light.  I encourage each and every one of you to call our website number and leave your comments, questions and/or thoughts on this subject as well.  We are very interested in hearing what these concerns are doing to your thought process regarding the ERA organization as we head into the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR)!

Joe Beaver

22-time National Finals qualifier and all around legend Joe Beaver in Alamosa CO

1. How can the ERA sell tickets to their inaugural World Championship Series without knowing where and when the events will take place throughout the year?

Many rodeo fans are very nervous to  purchase tickets for an event that they think may never take place.  I have tried to find out information about this very topic and have not received any verifiable information about the schedule but am very interested to learn if, how and when this information will be available.

2.   We are about to enter the NFR with many of the people who have announced they will compete  in the ERA.  That being said fans have been waiting too long to know when will there be an ERA contest, in turn, how will this affect the ERA as an organization?

My thoughts on this are that the ERA organization and the contestants vowing to compete in it know much more than we do heading into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  I don’t think that the ERA would go in to such a big event for their superstars having such an unknown question that would have such a heavy impact on their athletes.

 3.   If these questions are not answered by the start of the NFR will the ERA’s supporters cry foul and walk away?

I personally do not think that the rodeo fans will have to wait and wonder for the entire length of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for answers.  Every year the PRCA Commissioner holds a press conference and these contestants and staff of the ERA know that as well.  The ERA knows much more than they are leading everyone to believe and want to make an impact and draw attention away from this year’s WNFR.

4.   Will the ERA organization still be able to be successful if they keep dragging their feet on this.   Especially going into the NFR?

I , much like all of you, have been frustrated and confused about the ERA seemingly not knowing what was going on.  The more we all sit back and think about it it makes since that the timing of all the important information is revealed at a precise moment that will make the biggest impact that it can during one of the biggest rodeo events of the year.

My video blog, which will be posted at some point during the WNFR coverage once answers start to come in, will go into even more detail than I talked about on this post.  I dig deeper into the questions and expand on my thoughts and insights regarding the entire ERA issue going all the way back to its conception.  I hope that you will listen to my thoughts and after researching your concerns and questions for yourselves come to your own conclusions and thoughts on this entire story line.  Like I said earlier I would ask you to all call into the Rodeo Round Up listener line and share your thoughts and insights so we can bring you all a future follow-up story.  We would love to include some of your comments in future posts regarding the ERA and everything that has been involved since the announcement of its formation!

Talking about PBR World Finals 2015

Podcast: Play in new window | Download

Mark Anthony catches up with TheRodeoRoundup.com‘s main man and professional rodeo announcer, Jason Hetland.  A chance to get his review of the past year as well as a peek and predictions for what we may see at the upcoming National Finals Rodeo and The Pro Bull Riders World Finals later this winter.

At the end of 2014, Jason said that 2015 would be a year of big changes and exciting growth opportunities for the PBR and for him personally.  Plus some big changes will happen to the PRCA in 2015.  How right he was right on all of them!

(Please See Editors Note at Bottom for an update)

Jason started the year off covering the second RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN as well as The Iron Cowboy in Arlington texas. Two new events that are growing rapidly and changing the landscape of professional sports with their prize money and attendance. This year, Jason brought down some reinforcements.  His wife and his young daughter, to help cover the event!

From there, it was off to help a friend and an up and emerging country artist Dustin Craig.  His guitar riffs are what you hear on the beginning of all Jason’s videos as well as this podcast intro and outro.  Dustin has a booth at this year’s CMA Music Festival.  if you know Jason, you know he didn’t just hang with Dustin, he had to go out and say hello to anyone who has any connection to the world of country music, and that led to being on TV during the broadcasts as well as being backstage at the festival! It’s Jason and we like that about him.

The PBR

PBR World Finals hits las Vegas October 21 to the 25. This year the PBR saw a change in ownership that brought better recognition to the talented team already running the organization.  We said goodbye to a legendary bull and saw some new talent emerging from the new BlueDEF Velocity Tour  that will change the face of the World Finals.

Changes at the PBR World Finals include moving the Fan Zone to the South Point Casino this year and moving the World Finals to a new arena in 2016.  So we say goodbye to the Thomas and Mack this year.

We have already been green-lighted to take our coverage up a notch, so expect to see more and expanded coverage of the World Finals. More interaction with the fans.  So Send in Your Questions and requests now!!  Who do you want to know more about? What questions do you have for the contestants??

With all the changes and the passing of the baton to the next generation of riders and stock contractors, the one event you do not want to miss at the PBR World Finals is the Hero’s and Legends event. An opportunity for the fans to truly mingle with the people who make the PBR such a great sport.

While in Vegas for the PBR, we may have a difficult time tracking Jason down during the down times. As he has warned us he will be fulfilling a tourist list item.. Cruising the Vegas Strip in a Mustang convertible!

The PRCA vs the ERA

Where do we start with this mess of an organization called the PRCA?   Big changes happened this year as the Board of Directors continues to dig their heels in and protect the ego of the CEO, instead of focusing on the problems causing loyal members, long-time fans and supporters as well as contestants and event organizers to flee.

The Elite Rodeo Association (ERA)  was created out of the disappointment of the PRCA to work with the riders and event organizers.  The ERA is already shaping up to be THE place to see the top riders and legendary performers who once were the shining stars and cash cows of the PRCA.

With the new rules of the PRCA kicking in after the 2015 NFR and kicking out the top riders who have signed on to the ERA, many wonder if this will be the last time we get to see these guys and gals perform in Las Vegas??  Since most of the charter members of the ERA are also the top contestants heading into the 2015 NFR… This should make for some great NFR interviews!!

The Round-Up

We end the interview with just a quick round-up of what’s ahead for the Rodeo Round Up. The contests, future interview, the plans for covering the PBR World Finals and the NFR.  As well as asking for your input.  What do you want Jason to talk about?  Who should he interview and what are the burning questions he should be asking?   Let Us Know by contacting Jason here

Major Breaking News Regarding The New ERA, The Elite Rodeo Association…

May 26, 2015 By Jason Hetland

era rodeo

The Rodeo Round Up has just received a phone call regarding a major development regarding the future of the newly formed Elite Rodeo Association and the possibility of having its own World Finals in the great state of Texas.  We have been following all of the happenings extrememly closely to see what would happen with this new association designed and started by some of the rodeo industry’s “top-tier” athletes and after tonight’s announcement I have a feeling that we will be seeing things progress quite rapidly in the next couple of months.

era texas

Texas State Representative Cecil Bell, Jr. Announces Bill With Several World Champions

Numerous Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association’s World Champions and top athletes decended upon Austin, Texas in February earlier this year to announce the formation of the Elite Rodeo Association and its desire to hold its own World Finals in the great state of Texas.  After Texas lost the bid to hold the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo there was a buzz around the state capital to make sure they had a finals of their own to compete with what is to happen in Las Vegas and the ERA was their answer.

cecil bell jr

Texas State Representative Cecil Bell, Jr.

Texas State Representative Cecil Bell, Jr. authored a bill asking the state legislature to consider naming the Elite Rodeo Association as an addition to the state’s Major Event Trust Fund.  After almost 4 months of back and forth volleying the origional bill that was brought before the house as its own bill was redesigned and brought back to the floor for a vote in conjunction with numerous other bills tonight.  The change to add the ERA to the METF, Major Events Trust Fund, passed both the house and the senate just one short hour ago and will now go to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law.

whats next

Now that the ERA has been added to the trust fund they can start going forward in making the association’s start to happen just next year in 2016.  Things will not be easy, as you can imagine, to make it happen so quickly as there is so much to do to make it a lasting and competing association.  Not only do events need to be booked but a sight selection committee must be formed and then the task of finding the ideal location within the great state of Texas will have to happen which could prove to be the toughest thing the new ERA will have to come across.  The Rodeo Round Up team will continue to follow the developments regarding this situation and bring you all of the latest breaking news as it comes across our phone lines and news feeds.
