PBR Finals Recap with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer [Video]

October 31, 2013 By Admin

Having the chance to talk PBR with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer is always a fun time.  He’s very articulate, precise and truly understands the emotions of the moment.  Especially when the World Finals is this dramatic and record breaking.

Over the past five days, there was a buzz and swell of support for J.B. Mauney, who twice finished second (2008, 2009) and twice finished third (2007, 2010) in the season standings. He’s now finished in the Top 10 for seven consecutive seasons. The overwhelming support reached a crescendo in Round 5 after a re-ride flag was thrown when Mauney was unable to get out of the chute on Harlem Shake (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls). As he moved from a left- to right-hand delivery, the crowd chanted his name.

Tight Race All Around

The race for the Champion Bull Rider was just as tight as the race to be Bull of the year!   Bushwacker  won his second World Champion Bull of the World Finals title with 93.50 points, beating defending champion Asteroid  by 2.75 points. Bushwacker was 47.00 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday while Asteroid was only 44.50 points. Shepherd Hills Tested finished second with 91.75 points followed by Mick E. Mouse  who picked up 91.25, tying for third with Smackdown, while Lightmaker’s Rango  who tied with Asteroid for fourth with 90.75 points.

This was not only the 20th Anniversary of the PBR World Finals, it will also be the most talked about World Finals for a long time!

Catching up with PBR CEO Jim Haworth (Video)

December 3, 2012 By Admin

When they say “The Buck Stops Here,” in the world of the PBR, that means it stops with the man, Jim Haworth.  Jason Hetland gets a few minutes to chat with Jim about the Ring of Honors past and present as well as the up and coming riders and bulls.  Plus teases at the some of the new events and places for the 2013 season that were not yet released when we recorded this.

What was said:

Jason:  Alright – Jason Hetland here with 4theride.com and the rodeoroundup.  What a special guest that we have for a Wednesday afternoon.  I’m going to let him introduce himself without me because this man needs no introduction to me but he works a lot behind the scenes and sets up everything for the World Finals for the last couple of years so I want him to introduce himself to you.

Jim: Hi, I’m Jim Haworth, the CEO of the PBR

Jason: You need no introduction to us but what a fantastic turn of events since you’ve taken over as CEO.  The addition of the Heroes and Legends, the addition of the 15/15 bucking bull, the draft, a lot great changes that make the fan interaction much more enjoyable.

Jim Haworth: You know what’s great about this.  We were handed a legacy here with the PBR.  You get a chance to see a lot of the founders that are here today.  They started something that was so special and we’ve got to continue to make sure we help that grow and when you look at what we are able to pay out from a prize money stand point and the exposure we try to get for our sponsors, these kinds of things are very important and we’re excited to continue to get to pay our almost 10 million dollars this year in prize money so we are definitely going to want to continue that in the future.

Jason: Everybody talks about Chris Shivers and retiring from the PBR.  It’s got to be a legacy that’s going to be remembered for a long time and I’m sure it’s hard for you as the CEO of one of the greatest bull riding companies in the world to see such a great bull rider lost.

Jim:  You know Chris is so special and what he means to PBR and what he means to the fans.  You can see that today even in our world champion kind of forum we had this morning.  He’s special to PBR.  He’s one of those folks that comes through that he’s a superstar but he’s so humble the way he handles our fans and I don’t know if there will ever be another Chris Shivers.  Ahh, when you think about the kind of rides and what he’s gone through and the number of 90 point rides he’s had through his career, that may be difficult to match.  And you hope that we’ve got some of these young riders, which we’ve got some great ones coming up, that can kind of hopefully step in, and I don’t know if they will ever fill his shoes, but at least take a spot as we look at the future.

Jason:  Definitely, and as we look at 2013, do we have any special things happening?  Things that are new and up-in-coming for the new season that our fans can look forward to?

Jim: Hey we’re going to kick off at Madison Square Garden again this year which to me there’s a lot of special venues that we get a chance to go to but there in New York that’s a great place the go.  The Cowboys Stadium, we are going to do that again this year.  Should be a real exciting format again, kind of that bracket system that we do, as we think about that iron cowboy so it should be a lot of fun.  We’re coming back here in May for a real special event.  We’re going to do some things at the Mandalay Bay.  We got some national television exposure that we’re going to do.  Ahh, we will kind of fill the fans in a little more about that but a special format and a lot of prize money that we’re going to kind of build a special event.  They we’re coming back here again next October.  It’s our 20th year of finals in Las Vegas.  This week we announced our real connection with the city of Las Vegas and renewal of that sponsorship that’s important.  And next year with our 20th anniversary you got a great group here this year but we’re hoping to grow a lot more out for that 20th year special anniversary as well.

Jason: Definitely.  A big change for the 2012 season is a brand new host hotel the MGM Grand.  What happened and the new sponsorship at the MGM? And I tell you what, the venue they have over there right now for all the awards and the kick-off party was fantastic.  It seems like it’s going to be a great, lasting relationship.

Jim: Well you know the MGM and Mandalay Bay, they’re all kind of under the same umbrella from a corporate stand point but we started at the MGM so there’s a lot of history that goes with that and they’re a great sponsor for us, continue to be a great host hotel for us.  We have also expanded a lot of stuff here at the SouthPoint.  They continue to give great support for what we’re doing.  We are always looking for ways to expand our audience here in Vegas along with that how we get more fans and also how we get our sponsors and host hotels are looking for the same thing.

Jason: Excellent, well hey I really appreciate you taking time to be with us at 4theride.com and the rodeo roundup.  Later on ladies and gentlemen, round 1 from the Thomas and Mack Center and we will be back with the recaps and highlights from tonight’s events.  Thank you so much.

Jason interviews Adriano Moraes (Video)

December 1, 2012 By Admin

When you talk PBR World Finals, Legends and heroes of the sport, one name will automatically come up: Adriano Moraes.  Pro Bull Riding legend, founding member of the PBR and former World Champion Adriano Moraes is a one man PBR ambassador/marketing machine.

Adriano came over to us while we were taping at the 2012 PBR Heroes and Legends festivities.  A great guy and fun man to interview.  As always, he is humble about his status as a legend and as a three time World Champion. But always pushing the sport and its fans.

What Was Said:

Jason Hetland:  You know we speak about Hero’s and Legends Tour, we’ve had the great Cody Lambert but another guest stopping by the rodeo roundup, how about the one and only Adriano Moraes.  Thank you Adriano for joining us here this evening on rodeo roundup…

Adriano Moraes:  It’s my pleasure, it’s my pleasure

Jason:  Man this is such a great deal to be getting inducted into the Ring of Honor with Ross Coleman and Mike White.  You know all past world champs.  I was telling everybody on the show that past, present, future, their favorite PBR stars are here and you are one of them that everbody talks about.  Man it’s such an honor to be here.

Adriano:  Well it’s my pleasure and it’s always nice when we have this kind of stuff and inducting these two guys with us in this select group and which we are called “legends” laughing and those two guys they more than deserve it.  They are just some of the guys that make this sport what it is and for sure next year we are going to have some other great guys. And what’s good is you can come here and see these guys that we haven’t seen in the last 10-12 years.

Jason:  That’s awesome.  You know last year I ran into you, you were all kind of all over.  You are one of the fan favorites and it just means a lot and I want you to explain to the fans about what the interaction they can expect with their favorite riders here at the Heros and Legends something that’s a little newer to the PBR but it’s something that has taken off so much and so up close and personal with the extra time with your favorite superstars that people can’t get inside the arena at the Thomas and Mack?

Adriano:  Well that’s why we have these functions, it’s for the fans.  Without them we would ride for 1000 bucks but now we ride for over a million.  And you know thanks to those fans who support us all the way through it since 1992 when they decided to put this together and that’s why we have these fans so we can spend more time.  Right here it’s not just sign autographs, here we can talk, here we can hug each other and talk about the past and they ask us about the future and stuff like about the bull riding and we do this for you (looking at the camera), for all the fans and we welcome you and we want you to be here and exchange experiences with us and stories.

Jason:  That’s fantastic! You know we were talking about future and present, you are one of the founding members of the PBR.  Man you guys started this years ago with just a little bit of money out of your pocket and now look at what it’s turned into.

Adriano:  Yea, Yea, we could never have dreamed that this would be this big but imagine 10 years from now.  You know, so this is here to stay and its going to grow and we put the money in the pockets of those who need it, deserve it, which are our stock contractors, the personnel, and, of course, the riders.

Jason:  Definitely, and you know now that you are retiring from PBR what have you been up to?  A lot of people just really haven’t been finding out kind of what you’ve been up to since you retired.

Adriano:  Well, I’m farming a little bit and ranching a little bit.  That’s all I do and of course I’m doing a lot of activities with my boys, my boys are growing up and riding horses and doing some other activities, and just being busy.

Jason:  That’s fantastic and you know it’s so great to even see you still behind the bucking shoots and helping the Brazilians and everything else.  It’s such a family atmosphere back there.  It’s competitive but everybody wants the best for each other, doesn’t it?

Adriano:  Yea of course, there’s a major competition there between the riders and the bulls.  You know we help each other, we make sure that everybody is safe, and ultimately whoever rides the best bull is going to win.

Jason:  Definitely!  Ladies and Gentlemen Jason Hetland with rodeo roundup with world champ Adriano Moraes.

Ring of Honor PBR 2012 (video)

November 29, 2012 By Admin

This was the start of the long week ahead.  We begin with the Ring of Honor Inductions that was part of the PBR Heroes & Legends Celebration on Oct. 23 2012 at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas.

Before everyone got settled in to hear the stories and tales that led to the induction of Ross Coleman and Mike White, there was socializing.  And that meant time for Jason Hetland to grab some great interviews.

The PBR Ring of Honor Award was created in 1996 and is given annually to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the sport of professional bull riding, both in and out of the arena.

Each inductee is presented with a ring handcrafted of diamonds and gold bearing the PBR logo, the recipient’s name and the year he was honored.
