Rookie Sensations Continue To Impress In Round Three Of The 2016 WNFR

December 3, 2016 By Jason Hetland

wnfr-round-three-coverage

Last night many of the 39 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo rookie contestants continued to make their presence known as they continued to dominate here in 2016.  For the second straight night out of as many rounds saddle bronc rider Ryder Wright came out of the round as the man to beat moving forward.  After claiming two back to back round wins Wright has set himself up to not only win the average championship title at his very first WNFR but also has a chance to drive out of Las Vegas with a brand new Dodge Ram pick-up truck for winning the Top Gun award as well.

Also making a mark last night was Women’s Professional Rodeo Association’s barrel racer Kimmie Wall who came into her run full of confidence and determination.  That being said she put down a blazing run of a 13.79 which put her in the number one spot in the average heading into tonight’s third round of competition here at the 2016 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by .07 seconds which can be huge with runs being so close each and every night inside of the Thomas & Mack Arena.

Tonight we once again feature two of the traditional rodeo events that are held in conjunction with the WNFR here in Las Vegas to feature in out nightly round by round recap.  The first event that we will focus on tonight will be the timed event that we call tie-down roping that has drawn a lot of discussion and turmoil over the last couple of years.  Over the last two nights a seasoned veteran as well as a second year WNFR contestants have made their way across the South Point stage to collect their go-round winning Montana Silversmith belt buckles and Pendelton Whiskey.

Tonight however, a pair of men were able to add their names to the 2016 WNFR history books by claiming a go-round wins while splitting round three.  The men claiming those spots and sharing the title of go-round winners would be Hunter Herrin and Cade Swor who managed to fight through the pressures and short starts the continue to cause many contestants problems here this week.  They was able to make everything work together to lay down huge runs of 7.0 seconds that none of the other thirteen competing could beat in the third round.  I was able to catch up with them following their go-round winning runs to talk about the feeling of being able to look ahead to the next seven rounds after claiming their first go-round wins of the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  See what they had to say to me about all of this in the short video interview below!

In our coverage here at the Rodeo Round Up we spend some time spotlighting each of the seven events that are part of the Wrangler National Finals format.  Tonight the second event that we will be diving into is the event where fast and flashy cowgirls from the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association compete in a head to head match-up in the barrel racing.  Each year the learning curve is a bit hard on the women but so far this year all fifteen of these girls here have had absolutely no problem and have put on quite the display of horsemanship inside of the Thomas & Mack.

Over the last two nights Wrangler National Finals Rodeo rookies have shown up the seasoned veterans that are supposed to be showing THEM the ropes and the layout of the land.  In round one Pamela Capper would set the arena ablaze while in round two another rookie, Kimmie Wall, would take home the round win as well.  Tonight it would be Lisa Lockhart who would be able to claim the top spot in the round with a demanding run of 13.72 seconds.  With the runs that we have seen over the first three rounds I think it is safe to say that the attention to detail regarding the ground conditions have served a realistic purpose here at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  I caught up with Lisa in the media room before she headed south down the strip to the South Point to claim her buckle.  See what she had to say below.

The 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Kicks Off With A Bang

December 1, 2016 By Jason Hetland

nfr

Tonight Las Vegas turned into Cowboy Town as the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo kicked off inside of the Thomas & Mack Center on the University of Nevada – Las Vegas campus!  Even before the action began down inside of the arena the excitement and energy around town was all too familiar as we spend the next ten days determining who will take home each of the eight World Championship titles that are up for grabs here in Sin City.  Night number one was about to kick off in grand style as the cowboys and cowgirls compete for the prize money, the gold buckles and the world title championships.

The early story of the week is that of the amount of contestants making their own Wrangler National Finals Rodeo debuts and the close attention that will be placed upon seeing how they respond to the pressure that will be placed upon them.  Round one will surely tell us, for the most part, how things will play out for these young men and women that are competing inside the Thomas & Mack for the first time in their professional rodeo careers.  That being said, the anticipation among those athletes as well as the fans rooting for them has reached an all-time high here on this fateful Thursday night!

The Top Rodeo Athletes In the World Ride In For The Grand Entry

PRCA Photo By Greg Westfall

Once the lights dimmed and the excitement gained a few notches it was time to kick off the 32nd annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo that has been held here in Las Vegas.  As always, each and every round of each year begins with the grand opening ceremony and the parade of flags down on the arena.  This year’s round one kicked off with the “Road To Vegas” theme that payed tribute to the grit and determination that each and every contestant displayed throughout the year to get to this night.

All that being said, this year’s round one grand entry was something that nobody in the world had ever seen before with many of the notable names missing from the record books for 2016.  Although those names are missing that means that some young up and coming superstars were given the chance to compete here these next ten days.  As the cowboys and cowgirls headed down the alley way into the arena the smiles and nerves were running wild as the first grand entry of the 2016 WNFR was set to begin!

Tanner Aus Earns The Round One Win At The 2016 WNFR

PRCA Photo By Greg Westfall

The first event of the night would be non other than the rough stock event of Bareback Riding where, traditionally, Kaycee Feild has usually been a household name.  This year, as in most of the events, will be much different and will allow many guys the chance to earn a ton of money and a shot at a world championship title.  A young man named Wyatt Denny who would kick off this year’s festivities with a much needed 81.50 point ride to shake off the nerves.  This year the number one man coming into tonight’s first round of competition would be the Iowa cowboy Tim O’Connell who would be able to put up an 83 point ride here tonight.

Although O’Connell put up a solid score there was another man who would collect the first go-round gold buckle presented by Montana Silversmiths at the South Point later tonight.  That man would be Tanner Aus who would manage to pair up with Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Rodeo Houston Control Freak for a round winning 85.50 point ride.  I was able to catch up with him following his round winning ride to see what he had to say about his first nod of the 2016 WNFR and how he feels heading into the next nine grueling rounds of competition.

Clayton Haas Splits The Win In Round One Of The 2016 WNFR

In the second event of the performance it was time for the big boys of the sport that we all call Steer Wrestling to take center stage.  As all of you know, if you have ever watched a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo performance before, the timed events prove themselves difficult on the contestants here in Las Vegas year in and year out.  That was proven to be wrong tonight as these fifteen guys came in with nerves of steel and managed to pull off one of the best first rounds that I have seen in quite a few years.

Tonight there were absolutely no broken barriers and only a few slip ups once the cowboys dismounted from their horses.  In a blazing start to the 2016 WNFR we saw some of the fastest times ever laid down on the arena floor during any of the first round performances in the past.  After all was said and done it was going to be Clayton Haas Tyler Waguespack  who would lay down astounding 3.8 second runs to split the win, the paycheck and head to the South Point to see who will be the one receiving the go-round winning belt buckle!  I was able to catch up with them before heading to the buckle presentation to see what they had to say about their runs that lead to a split of the round one win!

wnfr-round-recap

If round one was any indication as to what we are going to witness here in Las Vegas the next nine nights are going to be absolutely crazy and those here in attendance will witness record breaking performances.  A huge night tonight is setting up tomorrow night’s second round and tightening up all of the world championship title races from an early start, something that we have not seen this early in a WNFR in a very long time.  The Rodeo Round Up will be here to cover everything that happens inside and outside of the arena!

We know that there are many folks who would like to know the winners of all seven of the events here on a nightly basis so we have decided to update you on the round standings as well as the average standings here in Las Vegas. Each night we will update you with the current round winner, the overall average leader and the round by round world title leader so you can all keep up to date with any changes throughout the event.  Below is a list of each round winner as well as the overall average leader through each round.

The ERA Makes Major Announcement During The 2015 WNFR Run!

December 9, 2015 By Jason Hetland

ERA-League

Things have certainly gotten entertaining here in Las Vegas and some news has come down the pipeline this morning that will shake up the rodeo world and create a buzz as fans enjoy the remaining performances of the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR).  There was always a certain amount of speculation as to what was going to happen during the 10-day run here and when the exact timing of events would unfold.  Early this morning the entire rodeo industry got their answer as the Elite Rodeo Athletes Rodeo Association (ERA) released their 2016 rodeo season tour dates.

If you all remember I wrote a story before coming out to Las Vegas telling you my thoughts on what was going to happen with this very topic.  I stated that the ERA knew exactly what was happening and had a huge plan already set in place.  It just so happens that is exactly what happened as the schedule was announced the very next morning after one if its most noted athletes, Trevor Brazile, claimed his 23rd career World Championship by clinching the All-Around title at the performance last night.  It might be interesting to go back and read my story about my predictions as to what would happen to see how close I was.  Story link here!

12351478_10208613081951497_81008110_o

I knew things were going to become very interesting after walking into the Country Christmas event inside of the Mandalay By Event Center just to see a huge sign hanging up on the wall as you walk into the event itself.  If the ERA wanted to create a buzz here in Las Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo they sure knew how to do it.  After doing some investigation work we also found out that they had a booth secretly tucked away out on the shopping floor which left many questions as to how that was allowed to happen

Barrel racer Taylor Jacob was photographed signing autographs at the Elite Rodeo Athlete booth which also generated more questions than answers.  After she split the round win last night Jason was able to catch up with her to talk about that win but unfortunately, we are barred from talking anything related to the ERA while down in the media room.  With that being said and as many of you know me, I did not let that stop me as I have scheduled a private sit down meeting with her to discuss this very topic.  Make sure to keep and eye out for that exclusive interview coming in the next few days!

2016 ERA Tour Dates announced at the 2015 NFR in Las Vegas

All the questions that remained leading into the start of the 2015 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo were answered early this morning when the Elite Rodeo Athletes Rodeo Association finally released their inaugural 2016 season schedule.  Speculation was that some of the bigger rodeos in the country were going to sanction with the ERA for an event but by the looks of the schedule that is not the fact at all.  I am actually glad to see that the folks running the ERA organization have gone their own separate way and have generated more excitement for the rodeo industry by creating their very own spotlight events!

AVI ALM Slack-2066

As the energy continued to grow inside of the Thomas & Mack Arena it was about to come to a head as the third round of the 2015 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was set to begin.  Much like every other year many fans look at filling the venue to capacity for a Saturday night performance that matches the top cowboys and cowgirls in the world against each other.  When the wait was over it was full speed ahead for the contestants of the 57th Annual WNFR!

Shea Fisher-Durfey Performs At The 2015 WNFR

Saturday night’s third round is typically a high energy night and the star power that starts off the evening on the arena floor has always been top notch and tonight was nothing different.  Australian country music superstar and wife of tie-down roper Tyson Durfey, Shea Fisher-Durfey, opened up the evening with a mix of high impact country music.  Following her performance it was country music group Gloriana that electrified the crowd with their rendition of the National Anthem.

team roping run round 3

Aaron Tsinigine and Ryan Motes Win Round 3

Tonight the Rodeo Round Up’s round three coverage focuses on the event of team roping as four of rodeo’s best superstars have to pair up together to claim victory at the end of the round.  Tonight, as the past two nights, the teams were pushing the barrier each and every run which brought some very fast times down on the arena floor.  After it was all said and done it was the team of Aaron Tsinigine and Ryan Motes who claimed their second round victory with a blazing fast run of 4.0 seconds to take home over $26,000 each!

Jason was able to catch up with them immediately following their round three win to see what they had to say about their run and the trip ahead of them that they will take across the South Point Hotel and Casino stage tonight to claim their go-round buckles.  As you can imagine they were pretty pumped up about the evening and as you can see they know how to have a good time talking about that but staying humble all the same!  Take a look below to see what they had to say….

There were six other events in tonight’s third round and we have the recap of the winners for you below.  Things kicked off tonight with the bareback riding where Steven Peebles took home the win for a second night in a row with a 86.50 point ride while the big boys of steer wrestling were fast but no one was faster than Clayton Hass who posted an astounding 3.6 second run.  Following the team roping was the classic event of saddle bronc riding where Cody DeMoss took home first place with a 84 point ride and tie-down ropers Caleb Smidt and Tyson Durfey beat all other competitors by claiming victory with 7.5 second runs to bring the crowd to their feet.  The last two events were the barrel racing where Taylor Jacob took home the top spot with a 13.77 second run and in the bull riding it was Cody Teel who posted a 86.50 point ride.

What News Puts Fallon Taylor’s Fans On Edge? …. Find Out Here!!

November 5, 2015 By Jason Hetland

Fallon Taylor

Photo Courtesy of AVID Visual Imagery

Fallon Taylor, the 2014 Barrel Racing World Champion, was coming into this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with the sole mission of defending her world championship and claiming another victory inside the Thomas & Mack.  Earlier today Taylor took to her social media outlets, as she usually does, to make a huge announcement that sent shock waves throughout her entire fan base all across the world.  She said that she needed a “pick me up” after learning some heartbreaking news that comes just one month prior to the start of the 2015 WNFR.

News traveled fast around the rodeo community and rumors started to spread about what her announcement meant for her and her quest to compete for another World Championship title this coming December.  She announced to each and every one of her fans that she had just learned that she sustained a devastating knee injury.  She was told that she had completely tore her ACL and was very down in the dumps with the news that she had just received.

Once the announcement was made there was a buzz around social media sites with everyone wanting to know what this would mean to those hoping to see their favorite barrel racer live in Las Vegas .  Along with all the unanswered questions were many messages of support and hope for the defending World Champ which were addressed directly from Fallon Taylor herself.  Along with the announcement came her weekly edition of “Fan Mail Friday” which she did a day early to raise her spirits up.  Although she was responding and moving forward there were still a couple of burning questions on everyone’s minds.  Would she be able to compete at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and what would the ultimate outcome be later down the road?

Much to the relief of many rodeo fans around the world Fallon Taylor took to answering their questions about her injury via her facebook page.  Once the answers started to come in we gained some much-needed clarity regarding the entire situation that was announced earlier in the day.  The question was asked numerous times if she would still be in Las Vegas competing in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  She answered all those questions by simply responding with, “Yes:)” which was great news and a much-needed breath of fresh air.

Many her loyal fans started to share stories and “treatment recommendations” for the World Champion and it was interesting to see everyone open up about their ACL injuries and recoveries.  After monitoring the situation we know that she is planning on wearing a ACL supportive knee brace to let her compete as well as she can throughout the ten day stretch of the WNFR.

whats next

Once the action winds down and the lights are turned off inside the Thomas & Mack it will be time for Fallon Taylor to fix the problem that was in the back of her mind.  When things are done and she did the best she could do her attention will turn to getting the much needed surgery and concentrating on her extensive recovery efforts to be able to make a run at the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  She will go into surgery on December 22nd so that she can start her rehab efforts almost immediately.  The Rodeo Round Up will continue to bring you updates as they happen throughout her entire journey recovering from her ACL knee surgery.
