The time is upon us once again to have a chance on witnessing history later on this week.  2013 Professional Bull Riders World Champion J.B. Mauney will face off with the legendary bucking bull Bushwacker!  J.B. was able to break Bushwacker’s amazing buck off streak last year in Tulsa, Oklahoma after riding him for the eight seconds required to a huge score of 95.25.  Ever since that fateful day, the defending World Champion has not been able to make another qualified ride in the numerous attempts he has had to do so.

This Thursday evening J.B. Mauney will have another shot to make history with his rematch against the 2013 World Champion Bucking Bull.  This will be a great chance for all the fans of the PBR to head to Santa Barbara, California to see World Champion face off with World Champion at the Touring Pro Division PBR Event.  If you are not able to attend to see it live there is a chance for everyone to watch it through the PBR Live option on its website that you can access here.

Jason was able to be invited to an exclusive teleconference with the 2013 PBR World Champion, J.B. Mauney, to find out about how he is approaching this upcoming rematch.  The Rodeo Round Up was granted permission to record the teleconference to be able to allow all of its fans inside access and be able to be a part of this exclusive event.  In our conversation, we talk about everything from his health to his personal life and how all that is affected coming up to his match up with the 2013 World Champion Bucking Bull, Bushwacker, in just a couple short days.  Jason and his Rodeo Round Up team hope that you enjoy listening to this conversation to be able to get to know one of the best-known names in the sport of professional bull riding a little bit better!!

Trainer of World Champion Bucking Bull Bushwacker Found Dead

February 27, 2014 By Jason Hetland

Kent Cox

Kent Cox, trainer of World Champion Bucking Bull Bushwacker, found dead Thursday morning

Early Thursday morning the trainer of the World Champion bucking bull Bushwacker was found dead on his property by Erath County Sherrif officers. Kent Cox, 42, passed away on private property just outside of Bunyon, TX where he keeps and trains his World Champion bucking bulls. Details are still very sketchy but it is believed to have been and preliminarily ruled a suicide. He was pronounced dead on scene by Justice of the Peace, Bart Greenway.

Kent has had some trouble in the past that has not been talked about very much within the sport of professional bull riding or rodeo. In January he was arrested by Dublin police as a result of a “standoff” between him and the police in front of the Dublin City Hall.

The PBR released a statement regarding the passing of Cox’s death stating, “The PBR is sad to hear of the passing of Kent Cox and would like to express that our thoughts and prayers are with the immediate Cox Family.”

The trainer for World Champion Bucking Bull, Bushwacker, will be on everyone’s mind this weekend in Arlington Texas. Bushwacker is set to be showcased at AT&T Stadium as part of the PBR’s Dr. Pepper Iron Cowboy event on Saturday and the RFD-TV’s American on Sunday. The American will make history as being the richest one day rodeo in the history of the sport but it does not stop there. Whoever the winner is on Sunday in the bull riding event is set to take a shot at riding Bushwacker as the bounty bull for an eight second ride for a cool one million dollars guaranteed for a qualified ride.

American Iron Cowboy

Trust me when I say this that it will not be the same without seeing Kent Cox behind the bucking chutes this weekend watching history be made as Bushwacker continues on his farewell tour. He is set to be retired at the end of the year after his final out at the 2014 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. We will all have to wait and see what will happen with this animal athlete with the news of his trainers passing.

All of us at the Rodeo Round Up wish to express out deepest sympathies to the entire Cox family and all those that ever had the honor of meeting him. He will never be here in body but he will never be forgotten inside of a bull riding or rodeo arena and his legacy will continue to be strong.

Stay tuned to the Rodeo Round Up for any further news regarding the untimely passing or World Champion Bucking Bull Trainer Kent Cox as well as exclusive coverage throughout the entire weekend’s festivities.

Legendary Bucking Bull Bushwacker To Retire After The 2014 PBR World Finals

January 23, 2014 By Jason Hetland

bushwacker

It was announced today that the legendary bucking bull, Bushwacker, is set to be retired at the end of October after his last out at the 2014 PBR World Finals in Las Vegas.  It was announced in the USA Today newspaper that one of the greatest bulls, if not the greatest bull, will make his last trip inside the Thomas & Mack Arena at the end of the year.  Bushwacker has some very impressive stats he has put up throughout his career which includes only being rode two times since 2009.  The last ride was 2013 PBR World Champ J.B. Mauney last year for 95.25 points.  This rodeo athlete has bucked off some of the best bull riders in the world and has a 96% buck off rate over his career.  All of his career stats can be seen on the PBR athlete profile page here.  People have many different favorite athletes they follow throughout the Built Ford Tough Series and that includes the bulls themselves.  Over the last few years, thanks to bulls like Bushwacker, folks not only come to events to see their favorite cowboys but to see their favorite bulls as well.

2013 PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney and defending bull World Champion Bushwacker

Before any type of retirement talks take place there is one match up that folks around the world are talking about.  This weekend in Oklahoma City there is this little thing called the 15/15 Bucking Battle taking place.  This match up is being compared to the great battle between Lane Frost and Red Rock many years ago.  2013 PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney will climb aboard the defending bucking bull World Champion Bushwacker.  These two met last year and J.B. made history by riding this 1500 pound bovine to the 8-second buzzer for a huge score of 95.25 just down the road in Tulsa, OK.  So far this year J.B. has broken a long standing consecutive ride record with riding 16 straight and now he has this in front of him.  An up and coming world champ against a retiring world champ!  Everyone inside the Chesapeake Energy Arena will witness one of the greatest moments in bull riding history no matter the outcome.

2013 PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney

J.B. Mauney has a history of coming up big against the toughest bulls in the business.  This is supported by the fact that Mauney has a qualified ride on 13 of the Top 25 PBR bulls throughout his Built Ford Tough Series career.  This fact along with fact that the  2013 World Champion has a 53 percent success rate against the Top 25 bulls during his young and growing career makes him unstoppable in anything he puts his mind to.  He is not afraid and actually welcomes the chance to ride the top bulls in the world and he has ridden every World Champion Bull since 2007 at least once which is an absolutely astonishing fact that will be hard for anyone to beat in the future.

Defending World Champion Bucking Bull Bushwacker will retire at the end of the 2014 season

Bushwacker will be in the spot light again this Saturday in Oklahoma City at the 15/15 Bucking Battle.  The PBR and Bushwacker’s owner, Julio Moreno, will announce the official statement about his retirement at some point today while the 2014 Built Ford Tough Series stop is in the Oklahoma town.

It was just released from the PBR where you can see this legendary bucking bull in person on his 11 stop farewell tour.  Editors note:  Thank you to the PBR for supplying this information for the fans.

Jan. 24-26: Oklahoma City
Feb. 7-9:  Anaheim, Calif.
March 1: Arlington, Texas – PBR Iron Cowboy V
March 21-23: Albuquerque, N.M
March 28-29: Fresno, Calif.
April 4-5: Nampa, Idaho
April 11-13: Billings, Mont.
May 9-10: Las Vegas – Last Cowboy Standing
Aug. 15-16: Tulsa, Okla.
Sept. 5-6: Nashville, Tenn.*
Oct. 3-4: Biloxi, Miss.*
Oct. 22-26: Las Vegas – PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals

* Subject to change based on 2014-15 NFL Schedule

Julio Moreno plans on retiring Bushwacker at his ranch in Oakdale California and he said to USA Today Sports,” He’ll have a pasture, maybe 15 acres, irrigated, nice clover, a little barn to come under, and he’ll probably have 20-21 girlfriends with him at all times. He’ll enjoy that.”  You can see the entire USA Today article here and learn just a little bit more about this great athlete.  It will not be the same without this legendary name inside the arena and having record breaking world champ fights with his counter part Asteroid.  There will be many great bulls that come in the future but I have a feeling it will be a long time before any animal athlete will come close to having the status that Bushwacker has within the PBR.  I know that Bushwacker will be missed not only by fans but all those involved within the Professional Bull Riders organization.  I can guarantee you that we will be seeing some of his offspring in the future and they will carry on the legacy of the great bucking bull Bushwacker.  He has had a wonderful career and will have a great life of retirement as a member of the Julio Moreno family.

PBR Finals Recap with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer [Video]

October 31, 2013 By Admin

Having the chance to talk PBR with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer is always a fun time.  He’s very articulate, precise and truly understands the emotions of the moment.  Especially when the World Finals is this dramatic and record breaking.

Over the past five days, there was a buzz and swell of support for J.B. Mauney, who twice finished second (2008, 2009) and twice finished third (2007, 2010) in the season standings. He’s now finished in the Top 10 for seven consecutive seasons. The overwhelming support reached a crescendo in Round 5 after a re-ride flag was thrown when Mauney was unable to get out of the chute on Harlem Shake (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls). As he moved from a left- to right-hand delivery, the crowd chanted his name.

Tight Race All Around

The race for the Champion Bull Rider was just as tight as the race to be Bull of the year!   Bushwacker  won his second World Champion Bull of the World Finals title with 93.50 points, beating defending champion Asteroid  by 2.75 points. Bushwacker was 47.00 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday while Asteroid was only 44.50 points. Shepherd Hills Tested finished second with 91.75 points followed by Mick E. Mouse  who picked up 91.25, tying for third with Smackdown, while Lightmaker’s Rango  who tied with Asteroid for fourth with 90.75 points.

This was not only the 20th Anniversary of the PBR World Finals, it will also be the most talked about World Finals for a long time!

PBR Iron Cowboy V winner to have chance at $1,000,000 ride

A successful ride on 2011 World Champion Bull Bushwacker is the challenge

During the press conference that kicked off the 2013 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, the PBR made several announcements previewing its 2014 Built Ford Tough Series season. The most compelling news could possibly be that the winner of the PBR’s 2014 Iron Cowboy V will have a chance to win $1 million dollars – only if he can last 8 seconds on 2011 PBR World Champion Bull Bushwacker!

Iron Cowboy V is the only bracket-style event on the BFTS featuring the PBR’s best 24 riders competing head-to-head for a total purse of $150,000. The winner will receive $50,000, and the opportunity to win an additional $1,000,000 if he can ride the World Champion Bull contender in the bonus round.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the PBR has visited AT&T Stadium for this event. It starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2014 with Iron Cowboy V.

During this one-night only event the riders will be randomly matched against each other in a bracketed format. The rider with the highest score in each matchup advances to the next level. If neither rider in a matchup makes a qualified 8-second ride, the rider with the longest riding time will advance. The matchups continue until one cowboy prevails and is declared the “Iron Cowboy.”

Tickets for PBR’s Iron Cowboy V are on sale with prices ranging from $20 to $150. They can be purchased at the AT&T Stadium Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com or by calling (800) 745 3000.

Arlington is the ninth stop in the first half of the 2014 BFTS schedule, and one of only 18 cities to host the series before the PBR takes its summer break in May. For more information, please visit www.pbr.com.
