New Last Cowboy Standing Champion Has Been Crowned!

As the third major event of the 2016 Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series comes to an end so does the first have of the season.  This weekend the Last Cowboy Standing was held in conjunction with the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s Helldorado Days Festival and Rodeo in the hot desert sun of Las Vegas, Nevada.  The historic weekend comes to a close tomorrow afternoon as the third and final performance of the 82nd annual Helldorado Days draws to a close.

After last night’s round one where only 15 of the top 40 bull riders in the world managed to cover their bulls for the required 8 second time 10 spots remained unfilled for the required 25 rider format for round two.  Proving that being consistent and up towards the top of the world standings is the place to be was the theme of the day for round two.  Although 10 riders did not make the buzzer last night they would have a second chance at the huge $100,000 payday and title of Last Cowboy Standing as those empty spots were filled in order of world placement.  At the end of it all there will be a huge celebration in the middle of the arena as someone’s pockets will be filled with gold in just a few short hours!

When round two began tonight it was apparent very early on that the caliber of bucking bulls was going to be elevated a few notches from where things were just 24 hours ago.  For those in attendance and those looking at the day sheets posted on-line, everyone was thinking the same thing…. who will actually be able to “cowboy up” and claim victory as we head into the summer break after tonight’s conclusion of the Last Cowboy Standing.  That being said, that was not the only anticipation the fans were waiting to witness on this beautiful Saturday night here in Las Vegas.

Tonight one ride in particular was the source of much anticipation for fans and contestants alike.  When Matt Scharping rolls into town you know he is hauling some of the best bucking bulls in the business for Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team and tonight was non different that any other weekend during the season.  Each PBR major has a special ride called the “bounty ride” that gives one contestant a shot at some extra cash to line their pockets with.  Tonight that match-up would be Jess Lockwood against Air Time for a shot at $50,000 which proved to be impossible so far this year.  After another great out by this talented bovine athlete, to the tune of 47.50 points,  eyes are upon him for the second part of the season to make another serious run at a world championship title!

The action down on the arena floor tonight was one for the record books as both cowboys and bucking bulls showed their grit and dominance for the sold out crowd to see on a steamy Saturday night.  If the blazing sun did not make those in attendance hot enough throughout the day the action that was witnessed tonight surely made their temperatures rise.  That being said round by round the contestants fell by the wayside one by one (round two / 8 qualified rides, round three / 2 qualified rides, round four / 1 qualified ride).

Once the action was concluded and the bulls were loaded to head home for the long summer break it would be one man that would be left in the arena for the final CBS Sports television interview with Leah Garcia.  Kaique Pacheco would manage to pick up 920 much needed points and made a huge surge up the world standings leader board to the number one position as the curtains close on the first half of the Built Ford Tough Series season.  Along with the points and the world title lead he also pocketed a cool $115,500 to send him off in style.
