The Story behind This Adriano Moraes Interview

November 1, 2013 By Admin

Sometimes good things just drop into your lap and you run with them.  This time it was World Champion and PBR Legend Adriano Moraes.

We were in what everyone calls the moat.  The narrow area between the stands filled with screaming fans and the fence for the arenas for the 2013 PBR World Finals. This is busy little corridor filled with credentialed media and CBS cameramen and on air talent.  Trust me when I say you get to know your neighbor really well while trying to stay out of the CBS gang!

It was the time between the final full round and the draw for the short round to decide the top 15 riders.  J.B just had a great ride and score while Salvanos had a not so good ride. People were not really sure if JB had the win in the bag or not…  Remember, it was a tight race to the end.

The head of the Brazilian contingent of media was standing next to us when one of his helpers spotted Adriono in the crowd above us.  They exchanged some hand signals and comments and the next thing we know, Adriano  was climbing over the rail and into our pit.  Literally!

By the time he was finished with the Brazilian media, the crowds were starting to get loud as the names of the riders were being announced for the short round.  The excitement and noise level was getting intense.  Adriano could have just went back to his seat, but with a kind word and a question by Jason Hetland, he agreed to stick around to talk.

The one thing you will always know about Adriano is that he is honest to a fault.  Opinionated, but honest when questioned.  He knew the scores and the results and admitted that America will have its first PBR World Champion in 5 years.  Even if his beloved Brazilian mathematically had a slim chance at winning, he gave his kudos to JB Mauney.

Social Media Works

For those of you still on the fence or Poo-po’ing social media…. the part edited out of the clip was the introduction of Adriano to Jason’s co-host Crystal Rae Coddington.  Adrianos remembered her from His Facebook friends list and acknowledged her.

PBR Finals Recap with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer [Video]

October 31, 2013 By Admin

Having the chance to talk PBR with CBS Sports Network’s Craig Hummer is always a fun time.  He’s very articulate, precise and truly understands the emotions of the moment.  Especially when the World Finals is this dramatic and record breaking.

Over the past five days, there was a buzz and swell of support for J.B. Mauney, who twice finished second (2008, 2009) and twice finished third (2007, 2010) in the season standings. He’s now finished in the Top 10 for seven consecutive seasons. The overwhelming support reached a crescendo in Round 5 after a re-ride flag was thrown when Mauney was unable to get out of the chute on Harlem Shake (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls). As he moved from a left- to right-hand delivery, the crowd chanted his name.

Tight Race All Around

The race for the Champion Bull Rider was just as tight as the race to be Bull of the year!   Bushwacker  won his second World Champion Bull of the World Finals title with 93.50 points, beating defending champion Asteroid  by 2.75 points. Bushwacker was 47.00 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday while Asteroid was only 44.50 points. Shepherd Hills Tested finished second with 91.75 points followed by Mick E. Mouse  who picked up 91.25, tying for third with Smackdown, while Lightmaker’s Rango  who tied with Asteroid for fourth with 90.75 points.

This was not only the 20th Anniversary of the PBR World Finals, it will also be the most talked about World Finals for a long time!

Mauney First American to win PBR World Champion title since 2009

October 28, 2013 By Admin

Las Vegas PBR World Finals

Brazil has dominated the world of Professional Bull Riding and coming into the 2013 PBR World Finals, they were grasping at the title…  But J.B. Mauney wanted it more and got it all in the end.

In completing the most dramatic second-half comeback in the 20-year history of the Professional Bull Riders, J.B. Mauney is the 2013 PBR World Champion.

The 26-year-old from Mooresville, N.C., made history at the Thomas & Mack Center by becoming the first rider with two perfect performances ― 2013 and 2008 ― at the World Finals and also became the first rider in PBR history to win four consecutive events at the elite level.

Mauney, who was ranked 10th in the world standings and trailed two-time defending World Champion Silvano Alves by 3,056 points coming out of the summer break, claimed the title Sunday afternoon by 977.75 points.

“When I was standing out there with my family and my wife was standing beside me, I kind of got a little choked up,” said Mauney, who has ridden at 221 Built Ford Tough Series events over eight seasons before finally winning his first gold buckle and claiming the $1 million bonus that comes with winning the world title.

“There’s no better feeling. You dream of something all your life and to eventually get it, oh, I mean, it feels like you’ve done conquered the world.”

Mauney didn’t conquer the world, but he spent five days gaining on one of the greatest Brazilian riders, who just last year became the first and only back-to-back World Champion in PBR history.

Despite the pressure Mauney put on Alves by winning Rounds 2 and 4 ― and eventually Rounds 5 and 6 ― Alves would not simply give up his claim as the top rider in the world until all six rounds were in the books.

Mauney won the Finals average with 546.25 points, followed by Alves (430), Claudio Crisostomo (346.25), Cody Nance (345) and Guilherme Marchi (343.75) who rounded out the Top 5.

“It was a good competition and it was good for the PBR,” said Alves, as a crowd of cameras took pictures while he talked about Mauney’s memorable win. “He did a good job and congratulations. It was a good (race).”

Joining the Greats

Mauney will now be named alongside the likes of champions Adriano Moraes (3), Tuff Hedeman, Owen Washburn, Michael Gaffney, Troy Dunn, Cody Hart, Chris Shivers (2), Ednei Caminhas, Mike Lee, Justin McBride (2), Guilherme Marchi, Kody Lostroh, Renato Nunes and Silvano Alves (2).

Mauney joins Lee (2004) and Nunes (2010) as the only riders in PBR history to win the world title and event average in the same year. He also joins Dunn (1995, 1997) and Robson Palermo (2008, 2011, 2012) as the only riders to win the average more than once.

Over the past five days, there was a buzz and swell of support for Mauney, who twice finished second (2008, 2009) and twice finished third (2007, 2010) in the season standings.

Alves had moved to within 32.75 points one out earlier when he covered Cowtown Slinger (K-C Bucking Bulls/Garrett) for 88.25 points, but once Mauney rode Ford Hammer Down (Wolf Creek Cattle Co.) for a 91-point round win, he led by 573.75 points in the world standings.

More importantly, his 453.25 points in the average was 107 more than anyone else and assured him of his sixth event win of the season.

Coming in behind Mauney and Alves in the world standings were Joao Ricardo Vieira, who claimed the rookie title, Marchi, and Nance, although no one stood a chance of catching either of the Top 2 on the final day of the season.

Bushwacker (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls) won his second World Champion Bull/Mikel Moreno Bull of the World Finals title with 93.50 points, beating defending champion Asteroid (Circle T Ranch & Rodeo) by 2.75 points. Bushwacker was 47.00 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday while Asteroid was only 44.50 points. Shepherd Hills Tested (Luthy/Duckwall/D&H Cattle/Powder River/Shepherd Hills Cutlery) finished second with 91.75 points followed by Mick E. Mouse (Marlene Henry) who picked up 91.25, tying for third with Smackdown (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/ Clay Struve), while Lightmaker’s Rango (Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls) who tied with Asteroid for fourth with 90.75 points.

Mauney also earned the Lane Frost/Brent Thurman Award, which is presented to the bull rider with the highest-marked ride at the World Finals. He won Round 2 with 93.75 points on Smackdown (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen).

Early in the week, Jeff Robinson won PBR Stock Contractor of the Year for the fourth consecutive time, voted on by the Top 35 bull riders in the PBR.

Aaron Roy also captured the Glen Keeley Award, presented to the Canadian bull rider who accumulates the most money during the season.

Night 3 Goes the Other Way. Alves Regains No. 1 Spot

October 26, 2013 By Admin

PBR in Las Vegas
For this being the 20th Anniversary of the Professional Bull Riders World Finals, this is THE most dramatic PBR World Finals ever.  Everybody up’ed their game for Friday night.  From the opening 91.25 point ride by Stormy Wing (winning the round)  to the closing rides that again changed the leader board.  The Thomas & Mack Center was not quiet very much or for very long…

J.B. Mauney rode Excavation for 89 points and an ear shattering audience applause.  Only to sit back and watch two-time defending PBR World Champion Silvano Alves ride Showboat for 89.5 points and finished second in the round to regain his familiar position as the No. 1 ranked bull rider in the world.

But it is still either man’s game…  Alves has just a 19.75-point advantage.  The narrowest margin of any lead this season.

“This is the tightest race I’ve ever been in – even coming into the Finals – and it’s like two fighters trading blows,” said Mauney, who was clearly exhausted afterward. “It’s been a long time since my mouth’s been dry before I got on a bull and it’s happened every night since I’ve been here.

Silvano Alves will have the second pick in tonight’s bull draft for Saturday’s fourth round followed immediately by Mauney, who has the third pick by virtue of their Round 3 finishes.

Round 4 of the 2013 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at Thomas & Mack Center. It will air live on CBS SN at 9 p.m. ET.

JB Owned the Night

October 25, 2013 By Admin

JB Mauney in Las Vegas

Night number one was a settling in and getting the feel of the land.  Not good, not bad.  Just a “Hello, The PBR is in town.” Night number two was different, it belonged to one man, JB Mauney.  Being that he and two-time defending World Champion Silvano Alves ride last set kept the house filled to the very end again!  Something you just don’t normally see this early in the battle.

Mauney won Round 2 with 93.75 points on Smackdown and has a commanding but not a solid 6.75-point lead in the Finals average.

J.B. has always been in control of his destiny and his emotions.  But many of us in the press pit are commenting on just how focused J.B. is this time.  He seems to be more focused than I have ever noticed him to be wife his wife Lexi by his side this entire finals.  He even admits that she has made him more grounded than ever and has felt that not only in his riding but his emotions as well.

We all used to see J.B. get angry and throw his bull rope and see that affect the rest of his weekend but now he has gotten in control of those outbursts and also has grown up this year.  Instead of throwing his rope and getting angry he now vents and lets it go to focus on the next round and tonight was the milestone of his attitude change.

Coming into tonight he was 173.50 points out of the number one spot in the world and he knew it.  With only two rides left in night number two of the 2013 PBR World Finals it came down to himself and Silvano Alves.  The entire Thomas & Mack arena were on the edge of their seats waiting to see what would happen at night’s end and it did not disappoint.  J.B. climbed aboard his bull and rode to the eight second whistle to a tune of 93.75 points that erupted the crowd in Las Vegas.

Once all the scores were tallied it was J.B. sitting in the number one spot in the world not to mention the number one spot in the overall average thus far.  The 20th anniversary of the PBR and the 2013 PBR World Finals are setting records for the closest race in the history of the company.

Its only night number 2!  Things will only get much more intense as the nights progress to see who will hoist the championship trophy over their head on Sunday afternoon.

Las Vegas Bull Riding

The first night is in the books and what a night it was. Thirteen riders covered their bulls….

I believe the story to follow the rest of the week will be Sivano Alves’ decision to to take a re-ride on night number one of the PBR World Finals.  J.B. Mauney was just 538 points behind him in the world title race before the start Wednesday night.  As he watched J.B. ride for a second place score of 88.75 he knew he had to ride to maintain his lead atop the season leader board on his way to a history making 3-time back-to-back world title.

Alves did ride his bull and was the last to ride to a score of 73.75 with an option for a re-ride.  Everyone inside the Thomas & mack knew this was a big moment and the decision for the Brazilian cowboy as he contemplated his decision.  Alves shocked everyone by declining his re-ride since his low score did not earn him any points and moved J.B. within 173.50 or the world number one position.

So the question of the day if not the week will be is that decision so early in the World Finals going to haunt this cowboy or was it a calculated move to secure a chance to ride all six of his bulls to gain yet another title and keep the Brazilian dominance going strong through the PBR BFTS?  I personally think it was a bad decision so early in the week and will haunt him as J.B. is as hot as he has every been coming into the 2013 PBR World Finals.  Only time will tell once the last bull is rode Sunday afternoon to see who will gain the notoriety of being named the best bull rider in the world!

From the PBR:

During an opening round which saw Tennessean Cody Nance win with 89 points on Roy (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls) – the half-brother to Bushwacker – it’s the race between J.B. Mauney and Silvano Alves that had everyone’s attention during Round 1 of the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals.

Mauney’s second place finish in Round 1 brings the point spread between him and reigning two-time World Champion Silvano Alves to only 173.50 points.

Mauney rode Train Robber (George Goins/Mike White) for 88.75 points and received an additional 350 event points for the second place finish, receiving a total of 438.75 points on the night.

Alves fought his way to the 8-second whistle aboard All Shook Up (Winston Loe/Melton Bull Co.) for 73.75 points, receiving a re-ride option which he declined. His score was only good enough for 13th place which did not provide him with any additional event points, allowing Mauney to inch even closer.

With only 13 men making the whistle, Alves’ decision to decline a re-ride and try for a higher score and placement may affect the championship race.

By deciding to decline a chance to better his score, Alves is at a disadvantage going forward this week. He and Mauney are now separated by 11 places in the average that’s worth 2,500 points to the winner. In the event both riders finish the season finale a perfect 6-for-6, Alves will now have at least 10 spots to make up in the average in the next five rounds.

“After all the talk and the questions and everything I just tried to keep it simple, have fun,” Mauney said after watching Alves.

“When asked about Alves’ decision to turn down a re-ride, he replied, “I didn’t know with being here, but, well, the way he’s went about things it’s worked two years in a row.”

“No, I’m not worried,” he said. “I’m going to go at it each night and let it all hang out and give it everything I have. That’s all I can do. The rest will take care of itself.

Wednesday night the ABBI Classic bulls clearly won the battle.

The top riders only accounted for seven qualified rides in the first 29 outs going into the intermission before six of the Top 10 riders in the world standings finished off the opening round with a flurry of qualified rides.

Round 2 of the PBR World Finals takes place Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. CBS Sports Network will carry the event live at 9 p.m. ET.
