The Tacoma PBR Event Makes The Run To The Summer Break An Interesting One

After a round where the loyal Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series fans witnessed one of the most dominating rounds of competition that we have seen in recent history the expectation of seeing that same surrounded this afternoon’s round two performance.  Hoping to see another round where 18 of the 35 riders get making qualified rides the sold-out crowd inside of the Tacoma Dome was full of anticipation as the opening ceremonies were set to begin.

This afternoon was one again filled up with bucking bulls that could be ridden if the cowboys of the PBR continued to perform like they did last night.  In a weekend where J.B. Mauney could have made history, his chase towards his 500th career ride ended as he bucked off in the 15/15 Bucking Battle so it will have to wait until the Last Cowboy Standing in Las Vegas.  That being said, he could leave Tacoma with 499 career rides if he covered both of his bulls here today.

As the action began down on the arena floor for Championship Sunday the feeling around the arena was that of nervousness anticipation among both the top 35 bull riders in the world and the fans witnessing the action in person.  Round two would be the last chance for these cowboys to qualify for the championship round, but that would be a tough feat as only 15 would advance and 18 have qualified rides thus far from round one’s performance.  That made for an exciting round two here earlier this afternoon as many of these cowboys needed to earn some much-needed world title race points to stay on the elite Built Ford Tough Series tour.

Once round two began it was two hours of non-stop edge of your seat action to see who would come out as the king of the mountain.  As the field dwindled down and the end of the round drew closer and closer the qualified ride count would not be as impressive as last nights but still a solid performance was put out by the cowboys here in Tacoma.  Once things were all said and done there would be 16 riders that would be able to make qualified rides to set the field for the championship round.  With that said, only Cody Teel would have to the distinction of being named the winner of round two as he put up an 86.50 point ride aboard Dakota Rodeo/Julie Rosen/Clay Struve/Chad Berger’s Tequila Sunrise to head into the championship round full of confidence.

After the two qualifying rounds were in the books the field of fifteen was filled and the bull draft festivities were set to begin atop the shark cage in the center of the arena.  After some shocking picks by the top fifteen riders from the event thus far it was time to see who would come out as the winner for the championship round and who would take home the title of the 2017 Tacoma Invitational champion.  Each and every fan had their favorite they were cheering for on both sides of the equation, bucking bulls vs. cowboys!

When things started it was quickly apparent that the bovine power would match up nicely with the cowboys that chose them in the championship round bull draft just a bit earlier.  Once things were completed and the dust settled down on the arena floor it would be Stormy Wing who would outlast the other fourteen contestants he was competing against.  He would take home the championship round win with a huge effort aboard Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve‘s More Big Bucks after earning an 89 point score for his efforts.

After an intense weekend of fantastic bull riding action, all of the top 35 bull riders were chasing one thing, an event win heading into the much-needed summer break.  With only one event remaining before that break the event here in Tacoma was a must win for a majority of those cowboys competing.  That being said, there could only be one and the man who managed to take the win home proved to be in complete control all weekend long and weathered the storm better than any other to take home the Tacoma Invitational win.

That man would be non-other than Stormy Wing who would head into Las Vegas full of swagger and the confidence that he would need heading into the PBR Major event in two weeks.  Wing would be able to go an astounding 3-for-4 with a combined 262.25 points throughout the weekend which puts all other bull riders on notice that he is coming after them as he makes his way up the world standings leader board in the chase for the 2017 PBR World Champion title!

As we close the doors on a fantastic event here in Washington State we look forward to the one remaining Built Ford Tough Series event in the first half of the 2017 season, the PBR Major The Last Cowboy Standing.  In two short weeks we will make our way to Las Vegas and celebrate along with the PRCA as the PBR will hold its event in conjunction with the legendary Helldorado Days Rodeo festivities that take over Sin City for a weekend of fantastic western sports entertainment!
