PRCA Barrelman Hippie Engelkes

This week’s guest on the Rodeo Round Up: Unplugged is Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association barrelman and entertainer “Hippie” Engelkes, a long time friend of the the Rodeo Round Up’s own Jason “TEX” Hetland.  Getting their start around the same time within the rodeo industry these two have had the opportunity to travel up and down the road together, working shows throughout the Midwest, for almost ten years.  This week Jason catches up with his long time friend to talk about how his career has exploded and brought him to new heights once obtaining his PRCA cardholder status.  We talk about everything from the years traveling together to his career now and even get into his personal life and how his family deals with him and his fame within the professional rodeo industry.

When Hippie got his start within the rodeo business, just like all of his colleagues, it was not a glamorous life by any means.  It was all night drives to different cities, sometimes even states, to make it to the next rodeo on time.  Along with the all night drives came the deluxe sleeping arrangements in the front seats of his cars or the beds of his trucks that he has owned throughout his career.  He talks about what the saying “rodeo way of life” means and fills us in on what it has meant to him throughout his career, how he got started with his rodeo career and what it has meant to him to become part of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association.

The cowboy from Steamboat Rock, Iowa has always enjoyed being in the spotlights and underneath the lights entertaining all the rodeo fans around the country but there is one thing that has always been his ultimate goal and that he has not yet achieved.  Even though he is doing what he loves it has been his dream since he was a little boy to entertain the crowds inside the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.  We talk about what this would ultimately mean to him personally and for his career and what it takes to get there.  Along with all the hard work are a lot of behind the scenes happenings that go on in order to be considered for the opportunity and we talk, in detail, about what it takes to make that happen.

Along with all the talk regarding his professional rodeo career we needed to dig into his personal life a little bit since that is what the Rodeo Round Up: Unplugged is all about.  While Hippie travels thousands of miles each year let us not forget that this man has a strong Christian faith and is an absolute fantastic family man as well.  I have had the honor of working with Hippie for many years and have been able to call his entire family friends of mine as well.  This cowboy always keeps his family first, whether he is on the road or relaxing at home on an off weekend.  We talk about what his family means to him and how happy he is when they can be with him on the rodeo trail.

Listen below for all of the answers to these questions and to hear how candid this cowboy entertainer can be both on and off camera.  It was a pleasure being able to catch up with my close friend and Professional Rodeo Cowboy barrelman and entertainer “Hippie” Engelkes.  If you like what you hear below make sure to check out and like his facebook page here to stay up to date on all of his wild antics and keep up with his travels throughout the nation entertaining the PRCA’s loyal fans!
