Historic Billings PBR Event Comes To A Close

This season’s Stanley Performance In Action Invitational here in Billings, Montana has been nothing short of remarkable with historic things happening for the second consecutive year.  Along with the excitement of re-writing the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series record books we have seen two nights of pretty good bull riding action with many qualified rides put up on the leader board.  That in itself made for a fantastic Championship Sunday performance here earlier this afternoon.

Last night we all were honored to witness the 600th career Built Ford Tough Series ride of the 2008 PBR World Champion Guilherme Marchi.  This is a feat that more than likely will never be seen again anytime within the near future.  The only man even merely close to him is a guy that made history here just last year with his 500th career qualified ride, 2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee.  To say that the Rimrock Arena and the Billings event is not one of the highlights from the past two years would be a huge understatement.

As we began the final push towards the championship round it looked more and more like you would almost have to have two qualified rides to make it here this weekend.  Throughout the first two rounds, we have seen numerous qualified rides, 6 of which gave just as many lucky contestants their second of the event.  When the round three match-ups were announced two superstars, J.B. Mauney and Guilherme Marchi, looked to have the upper hand for the event win when you look at everything on paper.  Time would tell but round three had to be completed before we could even talk about what we would be seeing in the top fifteen later in the afternoon!

Heading into the third round earlier this afternoon the electricity and excitement buzzing around Billings was at an all-time high after what they witnessed last night and knowing what they would see later in the day.  That being said, as the round reached the last ride there would be another solid 13 qualified rides posted while J.B. Mauney dominated the field and took home the top spot in round three and a ton of momentum towards the championship round.  He managed to bring home the round win aboard D&H Cattle Company’s Mudshark with a solid 89.50 point bull ride and 252.50 combined points heading into the Championship Round!

After three rounds of fantastic bull riding action, it was time to turn the attention of the sold-out crowd to the task of naming the champion of the 2017 Stanley Performance In Action Invitational presented by Cooper Tires.  Only fifteen rides stood ahead of doing just that as the riders climbed to the top of the shark cage to choose their bulls for the championship round.  Once all the pomp and circumstance was concluded it was time to get to business and see the top 15 bull riders from the event go head to head for the title.

Once the championship round began the look of the line-up had the feeling that round one did Friday night if you can believe that.  Both Seven Dust and High Chaparral both have been lagging behind other top contenders according to the Director of Livestock, Cody Lambert, and had to prove themselves fit earlier in the weekend.  That being said there would be 5 qualified rides in the championship round but no one could match the effort that J.B. Mauney put out aboard D&H Cattle Co./Buck Cattle Company’s Sweet Pro’s Bruiser for a 94.25 point ride and the championship round win!

North Carolina’s two-time PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney ended championship Sunday the exact way he began it earlier this afternoon.  Mauney would completely dominate the field today by winning not only the third round here in Billings but also showcase why he is on tour with a championship round win.  If all that was not enough he would take home the only 90+ point ride here this weekend and cap it all off with a huge event victory, claiming the Stanley Performance In Action Invitational championship!

After a historic weekend here in Billings, it is time for all of us to take a weekend off in order to celebrate the Easter holiday and spend some quality time with our families.  Many of the top 35 bull riders in the world will gladly take this short break to regain their health and look forward to headed back out to the west coast as we will say hello to all of the PBR fans in the great state of Washington.  Two weeks from now we will all head back to Tacoma for the Tacoma Invitational presented by Cooper Tires!
